Special Issue of Genèses Journal

« Philanthropies et prestige d’État en France, xixe-xxe siècles », Genèses, 2017/4 (n° 109)

“This issue examines the genesis of the opposition between State and civil society or private charitable actors, embracing a long period over which the categories used to think about philanthropy have evolved significantly. The main hypothesis that organizes all the articles gathered in this issue has been suggested, among other things, by the American detour. Symmetrically to the process of invisibilization of the action of the federal State in the United States, enabled by socio-tax expenditures (Howard 1999), our hypothesis considers that France is characterized, especially from the beginning of the twentieth century, by a euphemization of the participation of private actors in the elaboration of general interest.”
